The News
Shopify switched on the Universal Commerce Protocol by default for all ~4 million merchants in its Spring '26 Edition (June 17, 2026), making product catalogs directly readable by ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and Google Gemini with no merchant setup required.
If you sell on Shopify, a new kind of customer can now find your products without you lifting a finger: an AI agent. In its Spring ‘26 Edition on June 17, Shopify switched on something called the Universal Commerce Protocol by default for every one of its merchants. Your catalog is now readable by ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google’s Gemini, and other AI shopping assistants, with zero setup on your end.
Start with what an AI shopping agent is. Instead of a person browsing your store, picture a customer asking ChatGPT “find me a linen dress under $80 that ships to Dubai,” and the AI going out, comparing options across stores, and coming back with picks. For that to work, the AI has to read and understand product catalogs reliably. It could always crawl your public pages, but that data is messy and often out of date, so AI shopping did a rough job of it.
That is the gap the Universal Commerce Protocol fills, and it is not a Shopify-only feature. UCP is an open standard, co-developed with Google and endorsed by more than 20 retailers and platforms, that describes a product, its price, sizes, availability, and shipping in a clean, structured format an AI agent can read directly instead of scraping your web page. What Shopify did was switch it on for all its merchants by default. You are not opting in. And the structured version works far better: Shopify says AI searches using it convert at about twice the rate of scraped page data.
Why this is a bigger deal than a normal feature: it changes where discovery happens. For twenty years, being found online meant ranking on Google. Now a growing slice of shopping starts inside an AI assistant, and those assistants pick from what they can read. Shopify just made sure its merchants are readable, all at once. It is the difference between hoping shoppers find you and making sure the machines that shop for them can.
There is also a control question. Being discoverable by AI is good for reach, but it means an agent, not your carefully designed product page, is increasingly the thing a customer sees first. Your product data, the titles, descriptions, images, and specs, becomes the thing that sells, because that is what the agent reads. Clean, accurate, complete product data is no longer housekeeping. It is your storefront in the AI channel.
What to do about it now: Shopify added a new “Agentic Storefronts” section in your admin where you can see and manage this activity, channel by channel. Open it. Check that your product information is accurate and complete, because that is what agents surface. Treat how you appear in AI shopping the way you once treated SEO, as a channel worth actively managing, not one to discover by accident.
What to watch: whether AI-driven sales become a meaningful share of Shopify revenue, how much control merchants get over how they appear, and whether other platforms (Amazon, big retailers) push their own competing standards. For now, if you are on Shopify, the channel is already live. The only question is whether you manage it or ignore it.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Universal Commerce Protocol?
A shared format that describes a store’s products (price, sizes, availability, shipping) so that AI shopping agents can read and recommend them. It is an open standard co-developed with Google and endorsed by more than 20 retailers and platforms. Shopify enabled it by default for its merchants.
Do I need to turn it on?
No. As of the June 17, 2026 update it is on by default for eligible Shopify merchants. Your catalog is already discoverable by AI agents.
Which AI assistants can see my products?
ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google’s Gemini and AI Mode, Shopify’s Shop app, and other AI shopping agents that support the protocol.
What should I actually do?
Open the new “Agentic” section in your Shopify admin, and make sure your product titles, descriptions, images, and specs are accurate and complete, since that is what agents read and surface.
Why does this matter?
Shopping is starting to move from Google search into AI assistants. Being readable by those assistants is becoming its own channel, like SEO was for search.
