Nvidia's $250m UK compute pledge targets agent safety and security
The News
On October 13, 2026, US company Nvidia announced a five-year compute donation valued at $250 million, or $50 million a year, for UK research on agentic AI safety and security. Nvidia will fund the access through UK-based Nvidia Cloud Partners, on infrastructure hosted in Britain. Provider selection, technical architecture and commercial terms are still to be agreed.

Know More
- — Named groups: a proportion supports work with BOLD (led by Oxford), SOFAIR (led by UCL) and Imperial College London.
- — Wider community: gets the majority, per Nvidia's release, which gives no figure for either share.
- — Not in the release: GPU numbers, computing capacity, or which UK cloud partners will host it.
- — Quoted in the release: AI minister Kanishka Narayan and Jonathan Reynolds, Secretary of State for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade.
In August 2026, AMD signed a memorandum with the University of Oxford to explore providing up to £5 million of compute for researchers at BOLD, a new Oxford-led AI lab, over the lab’s first 18 months. On October 13, 2026, Nvidia named BOLD among three groups sharing part of a five-year compute donation valued at $250 million, for UK research on keeping agentic AI, the kind that carries out tasks by itself, safe and secure.
Nvidia says the research programmes will focus on secure agents, open-model security and real-world threat mitigations. “We are experiencing a critical moment where AI safety as an afterthought is no longer appropriate for the open-ended, evolving world,” said Jakob Foerster, BOLD’s founding director.
Kanishka Narayan, Britain’s AI minister, said the donation will “help build a distinctly British AI future that is safe, secure and that serves people’s best interests, objectives that will be central to the U.K.’s G20 presidency.”
The Read
On September 28, 2026, Nvidia launched its Open Agent Safety Platform, which Jensen Huang said brings together industry, researchers and public-sector organisations, partly to 'align on evaluation methods'. The UK release mentions research conducted using both of its parts, OpenShell and Sentry, so some safety assessment benchmarks from the initiative will probably be built using Nvidia's platform.
Room for Disagreement
The UK release attaches OpenShell and Sentry to 'research conducted using' them without saying any benchmark will use them. Its accounts of BOLD, SOFAIR and Imperial's work omit both tools, and it names no projects for the wider UK AI safety and security research community.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is BOLD?
The British Open-ended Learning and Discovery Lab is a UK-based AI research lab led by Jakob Foerster at the University of Oxford, combining researchers from Oxford, UCL and Imperial College London, according to AMD's August 2026 release. The same release says the lab will be built around three research pillars: new learning algorithms, human-centred AI and embodied systems such as robots.
Is Nvidia's compute donation an investment in UK startups?
No. The donation funds compute access for researchers. Separately, on the same day, October 13, 2026, Nvidia announced new planned investments in five UK startups, Boltz, Foresight, Hiverge, Prima Mente and Riverlane, according to a post on its blog.
How does this compare with Nvidia's US science commitment?
Five days earlier, on October 8, 2026, Nvidia announced commitments valued at $1 billion to advance US science over the next five years. Nvidia says it will commit that $1 billion through support for US higher-education research institutions, investments in accelerating American quantum leadership and support for cloud service providers bolstering US government mission needs, and Jensen Huang called it 'a $1 billion investment'. In the UK release, Nvidia calls its commitment a compute donation, Huang calls it a 'commitment' and Jonathan Reynolds calls it 'NVIDIA's investment'.
