TikTok's Shop ads take credit for sales your creators and your organic videos made

Put a product in a campaign and every order it gets counts as the campaign's. TikTok says that's the design, and there's one way to check it.

The News

GMV Max is TikTok's automated campaign type for TikTok Shop, and since July 2025 it is the only one sellers can create. TikTok's documentation says every order on a product in a GMV Max campaign is credited to that campaign in Seller Center, including orders that came from organic videos and affiliate posts. TikTok's position is that the system optimises paid and organic delivery together, so the combined total is the result. At TikTok World on May 13, 2026 it said new Pro features will add affiliate costs, coupons and platform fees to what the system optimises for; that formula is still in testing.

Know More

  • What counts as the campaign's: every order on a promoted product, including orders from organic videos and affiliate posts. Same-day orders use a one-day attribution window.
  • What doesn't: TikTok says GMV from products a seller chooses not to promote goes straight to the seller, unattributed. That is the only holdout available.
  • No benchmark: since July 2025 GMV Max is the default and only supported campaign type for TikTok Shop Ads. LIVE and Video Shopping Ads survive only outside a TikTok Shop destination.
  • A side effect: affiliate videos featuring a promoted product get a commercial content label, and in the EU and UK organic content pulled into a campaign is labelled automatically.
  • Coming, not shipped: Pro features factoring traffic streams, affiliate costs, coupons and platform fees into the optimisation. Cost of goods, freight and returns are not on that list.

Put a product into a GMV Max campaign and TikTok credits every order that product receives to it, including the ones that came from organic videos and from affiliate creators’ posts. That is TikTok’s own documentation, and it is deliberate: the system optimises paid and organic delivery together, so the combined total is what it reports. GMV Max is the automated campaign type TikTok Shop sellers run their ads through, and since July 2025 it is the only one they can create.

Which leaves the seller steering by a number with ad spend underneath it and sales the ads did not cause on top, and no manual campaign left to check it against. Two brands spending the same can post very different returns depending on how many creators were already posting about them.

One control survives, and TikTok mentions it in passing: GMV from products you do not promote goes straight to you, unattributed. Two comparable products, one in a campaign and one held out, will say more about what the ads did than the dashboard will.

Two things worth knowing before switching one on. Putting a product into GMV Max relabels the creator content around it — affiliate videos featuring it get a commercial content tag, and in the EU and UK organic content pulled into the campaign is labelled automatically. And the Pro features TikTok announced in May, which fold affiliate costs, coupons and platform fees into the optimisation, are still in testing. The cost side is getting more honest. The sales side is the design.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is TikTok hiding this?

No, it is in the documentation. TikTok's position is that GMV Max optimises organic and paid delivery as one system, so the combined total is the real result. The catch is that the number sits where a seller expects to find advertising return, and its label does not say it is measuring more than that.

How do I find out what the ads actually did?

Hold a product out. TikTok says GMV from unpromoted products is not attributed to any campaign, so two comparable SKUs — one in, one out — will tell you more than the dashboard will. It is manual, and it is the only test available.

Who does this flatter most?

Sellers with big affiliate programmes and strong organic reach, because they have the most non-ad sales to be counted in. Two brands spending identically can post very different returns for reasons that have nothing to do with the ads.
