Etsy bans AI-generated patterns, recipes and instructions

The News

On October 22, 2026, Etsy barred AI-generated functional guides, like patterns, recipes and instructions, and bot-generated listings without any human involvement. For most products, listings must include at least one unedited photo of the actual item against a real background. Sellers whose listings miss the image rules may be responsible for refunding buyers who open cases over materially different items.

Know More

  • — Other photos: editing, including AI, may adjust lighting or colour, crop, resize or change backgrounds if the result stays accurate.
  • — Existing listings: those missing the image requirements need updating; Etsy's handbook and policy page state no deadline or grace period.
  • — Listing form: Etsy is adding guidance that flags AI-generated images it detects in new uploads, later extending to existing images.
  • — Reports: a new reason will let members flag suspected misleading AI imagery; to start, without immediate enforcement action.

Etsy requires seed sellers to include a real, unedited photo of something grown from their seeds, such as a blooming flower. A crochet pattern needs one of a completed project made from it. Value Added Resource ties that requirement to a November 2025 Ask Me Anything with Kruti Patel Goyal, then Etsy’s incoming chief executive, where one seller said many AI-generated crochet patterns on Etsy often don’t make anything like the item pictured.

AI-generated art stays allowed when sellers play a clear creative role and are transparent about their process, Etsy’s Seller Handbook says. Sellers must disclose when an item is created using AI and can’t present it as handmade or entirely their own creation.

The required photo must not be edited or changed in any way. Value Added Resource reads that as ruling out cropping and exposure fixes, and says Etsy hasn’t explained how it will tell those edits from automatic processing by cameras, phones and other software.

The Read

Many active buyers say they can't tell which items involve AI-generated content, Etsy says, calling it a top-three barrier to shopping more often on Etsy. Etsy's listing form will probably add enforcement to its tips, since Etsy says it will flag detected AI-generated images with tips and plans, over time, to enforce photo requirements more proactively as listings are created.

Room for Disagreement

Tips may stay tips. Etsy allows AI-generated art when sellers play a clear creative role and are transparent about their process, accurate AI edits to other photos, and non-misleading AI imagery for non-visual downloads. Value Added Resource says Etsy hasn't explained how its systems will tell these from prohibited uses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Etsy listings follow different photo rules?

Etsy's policy sets different requirements for certain items, including print-on-demand, digital, customized and made-to-order items. If a production partner prints a seller's original design on a standard base product, like a t-shirt or mug, the seller may use a stock photo mockup if the stock photo's owner has authorized its use. Digital items with no visual elements, like audio files, may use representative imagery, including AI-generated images, as long as it doesn't mislead buyers; other digital downloads should include a visual preview or excerpt. Sellers of customized items they make themselves should show photos of real, finished items they've made in the past.

Does any law add to Etsy's rules on AI images?

Etsy's handbook post points sellers with buyers in the United States to California's SB 1050, which it says takes effect January 1, 2027. Under that law, Etsy says, listing images or videos may be considered advertisements and may require a clear disclosure if they prominently feature an AI-generated synthetic performer, a figure, voice or representation created with generative AI that realistically appears to be a human performer but isn't an identifiable real person. Etsy encourages sellers to consult their own legal counsel.

What happens to listings made by bots?

Etsy says bot-generated listings without any human involvement will be removed and may also result in the shop being removed from Etsy. A seller whose listing is removed can appeal through the Policy violations page in Shop Manager, Etsy says. Value Added Resource reports that Etsy's updated AI creations policy doesn't specify how much human involvement is sufficient.

Walmart will let AI agents buy within a spending limit

Walmart said on October 21, 2026 that Agent Profiles, launching in the next month, will let customers require approval for every purchase an AI agent makes or set a spending limit. Its terms say agents don't receive customers' payment-card information, and agents that don't follow the terms will be blocked from Walmart's site.

OpenAI gives itself default permission to edit ChatGPT ads

OpenAI's creative enhancements can adjust ChatGPT ad headlines and descriptions, resize images, optimize destination URLs and translate ad text, and the ads can run without requiring advertisers to review or approve each version. They will switch on by default for new and existing campaigns on October 29 or 30, 2026, depending on which OpenAI notice you read.
