Shopify lets any AI agent check out with Shop Pay
The News
Shopify said on October 13, 2026 that Shop MCP is live: a single connection that lets any AI agent supporting the Model Context Protocol (MCP) search Shopify Catalog, build carts and check out. It covers over 1 billion products, and search needs no API key. Shoppers signed in to Shop, Shopify's shopping app, can pay with Shop Pay.

Know More
- — Tools: 17 in total; search, carts and checkout work without the shopper signing in to Shop.
- — Webhooks: none at launch, so developers poll get_checkout for a checkout's status.
- — App makers: shop.dev says “Earn commission when shoppers buy items your app finds”; Promoted Placements is in early access.
- — Not stated by Shopify's changelog, shop.dev or Shop's help page: merchant or shopper fees, or which countries Shop MCP serves.
Shopify’s suggested first test is two terminal commands: an install, then shop search "ceramic coffee dripper". Each result shows the store, price and whether it’s in stock. Agents use the same server, mcp.shop.com, whose documents follow the Universal Commerce Protocol, which TikTok made a condition of its in-feed checkout.
At a Shopify store, the agent completes the purchase once a signed-in shopper confirms the total and payment method, and the order lands in the merchant’s admin like any other order. At other stores, the shopper approves the purchase in Shop and the agent receives single-use payment credentials for that store’s checkout.
By default, the shopper reviews and approves every purchase, Shop’s help page says. In some cases, the shopper can instead let a personal agent place orders on a weekly, monthly or total budget, and is responsible for purchases within the permissions and budget they set, “even if the agent misunderstands your instructions or buys something you didn’t expect.”
The Read
Shopify's changelog gives its reason: agents could find products in Catalog but had to send shoppers to the store's website to pay, “which often caused drop-off.” Signed-in shoppers can also approve, in Shop, card payments at stores that don't run on Shopify. On that design, Shop Pay looks set to become a wallet agents carry from store to store.
Room for Disagreement
Outside Shopify, the agent must get through each store's checkout page. Shop's approvals guide lists failure codes including captcha, anti-bot scripts, required logins and 3D Secure challenges. It also says Shop can withhold the approval tools from a signed-in app even when account access works, and can turn approvals off.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a merchant keep its products away from AI agents?
Not from Shopify Catalog as a whole. Shopify's Help Center says “You can't opt out of Shopify Catalog itself,” and a store's products are included automatically when the store and products meet its requirements. A merchant can stop individual agentic storefronts from reaching its products through Catalog, but those preferences “don't impact Shop,” another Help Center page says, and the products stay discoverable on Shop. Neither Help Center page nor the October 13 changelog says whether an agent on Shop MCP counts as an agentic storefront.
How is Shop MCP different from Shopify's other agent servers?
Shop MCP sits at mcp.shop.com and brings in the shopper's Shop account, Shop Pay and payment approvals. A separate server also called Shop MCP, at shop.app/mcp, offers a single search tool over Shop.app's catalogue. Shopify deprecated get_cart and update_cart on its per-store Storefront MCP on June 24 and said it would maintain them until August 31, 2026; its Storefront MCP guide, as of October 18, says the catalogue and cart tools on that endpoint “were removed.” Separately, the Global Catalog REST API, Shopify's older developer interface for searching its catalogue, stops serving traffic on November 2, 2026. Shopify's October 9 notice tells developers still calling it to migrate to Global Catalog MCP, a different server offering search_catalog, lookup_catalog and get_product, the three tool names Shop MCP also uses for search and product details.
What does an agent connected to Shop learn about the shopper?
Shop's help page says the information is displayed when the shopper connects and may include their name, email address, phone number, shipping and billing addresses, limited payment method details such as card brand, payment method type and the last four digits, purchase approval details, order information and personalised search results. After that, the agent's own terms, privacy policy, settings and the shopper's instructions govern its use. Shop says it “isn't responsible for how your agent or an agentic platform uses your information or follows your instructions,” and disconnecting “won't delete information that was already shared.”
