TikTok makes UCP a condition of its in-feed checkout

The News

TikTok announced two shopping tools at Advertising Week New York on October 5, 2026. Buy Direct is a one-click checkout that lets a shopper buy from a brand in the For You feed without leaving TikTok, with the brand remaining the Merchant of Record. TikTok says it requires an integration with the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), the open standard for agentic commerce that Google launched in January. Shopping Assistant is an AI chat that answers product questions on the brand's product page inside TikTok's in-app browser. Both are available through eligibility-based testing arranged with a TikTok sales partner.

Know More

  • — Partners TikTok names for the new tools: Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza and Stripe, "and more."
  • — Salesforce Commerce Cloud: a native UCP integration for Buy Direct ads, with a phased rollout of its UCP-powered TikTok experiences expected to begin in Q1 2027.
  • — UCP's co-developers for shopping, as listed on ucp.dev on October 6, 2026: Google, Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target, Walmart, Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Salesforce and Stripe. TikTok is not among the co-developers or endorsers listed there.
  • — Also announced on October 5: Lead Agent, a conversational agent for lead generation; the TikTok Ad Network for US advertisers; and the TikTok for Business MCP as a connector in AI platforms including Claude and Perplexity. TikTok said GMV Max "will" factor in business costs such as affiliate commissions, coupons and referral fees.

TikTok’s October 5 post introducing Buy Direct, the one-click checkout it is testing inside the For You feed, names a technical condition for brands: “Buy Direct requires an integration with Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP).” TikTok describes the protocol as “a standardized set of rules that enables AI agents and merchant systems to work together,” and Shopify, one of the partners TikTok names, says its storefronts already advertise support for it.

TikTok says brands remain the Merchant of Record on Buy Direct sales, the same term UCP’s own site sets for businesses on the protocol: they “remain the Merchant of Record, with full ownership of customer relationships.” Salesforce tells its Commerce Cloud merchants what that means in practice: the brand captures the shopper’s contact details and purchase history, handles service and returns, and can follow up by email.

Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke and Distinguished Engineer Ilya Grigorik on developing UCP in the open, published by Shopify in May 2026. It explains the protocol’s design and predates TikTok’s announcement, so it does not show Buy Direct or Shopping Assistant.

TikTok has not put either tool on general release. It says its new agentic tools are “available through eligibility-based testing opportunities,” arranged through a brand’s TikTok sales partner. Salesforce expects the phased rollout of its UCP-powered TikTok experiences to begin in the first quarter of 2027, which puts Salesforce’s own route after the 2026 holiday season.

Brands, and the agencies running their TikTok budgets, can answer one question before asking for a test: does the store already speak UCP? A store that does has the protocol TikTok names, though a test slot still goes through a TikTok sales partner. In ReFiBuy’s Q2 index of the Top 1000 retailers by online sales, 225 had a detectable UCP endpoint, a figure published in August. Google pitched the protocol in January as a way to avoid “unique connections for every individual agent,” and TikTok has put its checkout on that footing.

Room for Disagreement

A brand could fairly decide to wait. TikTok has published no fees, eligible markets, eligibility criteria or general release date, and its statement that brands "see improved conversion rates" comes without a figure. Being merchant of record decides who owns the sale and says nothing about what the sale costs the brand. TikTok presents Buy Direct as an advertising solution, so the brand still pays for the ad that carries the offer, on terms TikTok has not set out in public.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Buy Direct the same as TikTok Shop?

TikTok's two October 5 posts do not say how the two relate. Salesforce, one of the partners TikTok names, treats them as separate integrations for its Commerce Cloud merchants: a native TikTok Shop connection, due for general availability in January 2027, and a UCP integration for Buy Direct ads.

What does Shopping Assistant actually do?

TikTok's business blog describes a chat window that opens on a brand's product page inside TikTok's in-app browser and answers the shopper's questions, such as fit, materials or colours, from information the merchant provides. The shopper then checks out on the merchant's own site, still inside the in-app browser. TikTok's newsroom post describes it more broadly, as guidance through to purchase "all within one conversation." The business blog is the more specific of the two.

Is Buy Direct open to Shopify merchants?

TikTok names Shopify as a partner, and Shopify's developer changelog of September 4 says Shopify storefronts advertise UCP support in their discovery profiles. Neither TikTok's posts nor Shopify's changelogs, as of October 6, say that Shopify merchants are enrolled in Buy Direct or explain how they would join. The starting point is a TikTok sales partner.

Meta edits “train” out of its US crawl clause

From October 30, 2026, Meta's Commercial Terms authorize it to crawl pages associated with the products or services of businesses using Meta commercially. Meta cut “train” from the US text on October 16; legal experts told Nieman Lab the wording is still broad.
