OpenAI gives itself default permission to edit ChatGPT ads

The News

OpenAI will default new and existing ChatGPT Ads campaigns to “creative enhancements.” Enhancements can adjust headlines and descriptions, resize images, optimize destination URLs and translate ad text; enhanced ads can run without requiring advertisers to review or approve each version. OpenAI's email, which Search Engine Roundtable published October 20, dates the switch October 30; OpenAI's help page says October 29.

Know More

  • — Opt-out: any time in Ads Manager. Existing account- and campaign-level opt-outs are preserved; campaign settings override the account default.
  • — The toggle: in Ads Manager's ad account settings; Search Engine Roundtable's Barry Schwartz showed his set to on.
  • — OpenAI's caveat: metrics “describe overall performance,” and changes over time don't, on their own, establish enhancements' effect.

In OpenAI’s own example, set in a conversation about planning quick weeknight dinners, the headline “Fresh groceries delivered” becomes “Groceries for quick weeknight dinners.” OpenAI’s help page says the example assumes the original ad and landing page support the product and delivery details shown, and that “actual wording may vary.”

Search Engine Roundtable’s Barry Schwartz, one of the advertisers who received the email, published it on October 20. It covers “new and existing self-serve campaigns”; the help page says “new and existing campaigns” and doesn’t mention self-serve.

Variations “may be prepared in advance or created in real time based on the conversation,” the page says. Ads Manager reporting, at campaign, ad group and ad level, includes impressions, clicks, spend, click-through rate and, if conversion measurement is set up, attributed conversions; the page describes no report showing which version ran.

The Read

OpenAI says enhancements are designed to make ads more relevant to the conversation and user interests while reducing the work of creating multiple versions. It adapts the message from the existing ad and landing-page content, and offers no preview of every variation, so landing pages will probably get the review that advertisers who leave it on can't give each version.

Room for Disagreement

Reviewing the landing page may not settle what runs. Enhancements can also take into account the conversation or user interests, and the destination URL may be optimized to direct people to a relevant page on the advertiser's website. Advertisers who want their ads to run as written can opt out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will enhanced ads change what ChatGPT says?

No, according to OpenAI's help page, which says “Ads do not influence ChatGPT's answers. Ads are separate and clearly labeled.” The page doesn't say whether an enhanced ad tells users that OpenAI adjusted or translated its text.

Does the change cover every country where ChatGPT ads run?

Neither OpenAI's advertiser email, as Search Engine Roundtable published it on October 20, nor its help page limits the change to particular markets. OpenAI's email describes the change as covering self-serve campaigns. ChatGPT ads began in the US in February 2026, and on October 21 OpenAI said it was expanding them to 26 additional countries, “extending availability to 89 countries worldwide.” It says advertisers in the new countries can access ChatGPT Ads through technology partners or self-service through Ads Manager.

What does OpenAI ask advertisers to prepare?

To give enhancements “useful, accurate source information,” OpenAI's help page asks advertisers to keep ads and landing pages current, “including prices, promotions, product details, and availability,” to write clear, specific copy explaining what they offer, and to make sure creative and landing pages comply with OpenAI's Ads Policies.

Etsy bans AI-generated patterns, recipes and instructions

Etsy's October 22, 2026 rules bar AI-generated functional guides, like patterns, recipes and instructions, and bot-generated listings without any human involvement. For most products, listings now need at least one unedited photo of the actual item against a real background.

Retail Adoption

Walmart will let AI agents buy within a spending limit

Walmart said on October 21, 2026 that Agent Profiles, launching in the next month, will let customers require approval for every purchase an AI agent makes or set a spending limit. Its terms say agents don't receive customers' payment-card information, and agents that don't follow the terms will be blocked from Walmart's site.
